Emerald Azzurra Opens a New Chapter of Luxury Tourism in Herceg Novi

Today, the luxury mini cruise ship Emerald Azzurra docked at Portonovi Marina, officially marking a new chapter in the development of luxury and nautical tourism in Herceg Novi. This event represents the first-ever arrival of an international mini passenger cruise ship in the municipality’s history, following Portonovi Marina’s official approval to accommodate such vessels.

Guests were warmly welcomed on a red carpet, accompanied by a performance by the Local Brass Orchestra and majorettes, and had the exclusive private tour of the resort to experience the magic of Portonovi firsthand.

“ The arrival of the Emerald Azzurra and the official opening of Portonovi Marina for international passenger traffic is a historic moment for our city. Herceg Novi has always had the potential to become a luxury destination, and through the partnership with Portonovi, that potential is finally being realized.

This new chapter — welcoming luxury mini cruise ships — will enhance our tourism offerings and bring added value to the local economy. We anticipate the growth of complementary businesses and job creation, particularly in services tailored to high-end travelers,” said the Mayor of Herceg Novi, Stevan Katić.

"Portonovi Marina has officially received authorization to accommodate mini luxury cruise ships up to 140 meters in length and 200 passengers, enabling Herceg Novi to become, for the first time, a new destination on the map of ultra-luxury cruise tourism in the Adriatic. We have successfully met all technical and safety requirements, certified our team, and provided infrastructure in accordance with ISPS standards. This season is just the beginning, and we expect full development by 2026," said Novica Radojičić, Portonovi Marina Manager.

The approval to accommodate mini luxury cruise ships is the result of an extensive process of alignment with international regulations and safety protocols. The procedure was conducted in accordance with the Rulebook on the conditions that a port open to international traffic must fulfill. Following the application and presentation of the marina infrastructure, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Transport formed a commission that carried out an on-site assessment and confirmed that the marina meets all required technical and safety standards. Based on the commission’s report, the Government of Montenegro officially granted Portonovi Marina the status of a port open to international passenger traffic.

A Security Assessment and Security Plan are developed as part of the process, followed by issuing a Certificate of Compliance. Two staff members have obtained certification as Port Facility Security Officers, while all other employees have completed the required security training and have been assigned official security duties with proper certification.

Emerald Azzurra is a 110-meter luxury superyacht cruise ship built in 2022 for Emerald Cruises. It can accommodate up to 100 passengers in 50 stylishly designed cabins, most of which feature private terraces. Onboard amenities include a restaurant, lounge, spa center, gym, sun deck, and a private marina platform for water-based activities. Its limited capacity and exclusive features provide a highly personalized and intimate cruising experience, making it ideal for carefully selected destinations like Portonovi.
